Rodanthe Pier sits at the most easterly point of the Outer Banks, where it reliably picks up the biggest swells in the area. It breaks over sand, and the constantly shifting sandbars can produce a powerful wave that runs both left and right. The pier has been rebuilt many times and now extends to 700 ft. It's a very consistent spot.
When It Works
The break draws swell from south to north (S-N), with northeast (NE) the best direction. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft, giving a wide working window from small days up to serious size.
Wind and Tide
Look for west (W) offshore wind. The pier works on low and mid tide, and a rising tide is the better call, with a low incoming tide tending to produce the most powerful, hollow waves. Dead high fattens the waves right out unless the swell is sizable.
Local Tips
Rodanthe Pier suits intermediate surfers, and the lineup gets busy when it's working. Keep in mind the pier owner, who doesn't want surfers parking nearby or riding within 250 ft (80 m) of the pier, along with fishermen who cast lead-weighted hooks with some accuracy.
Access
There's a surf shop at the spot. Parking is a free but restricted car park, and the summer parking scene can be rough.
