Saint Gilles Croix de Vie surf guide

Saint Gilles Croix de Vie is a surfing spot located along the Atlantic coast of France. It's known for its city vibe, complete with a concrete promenade that attracts plenty of onlookers. This can be a mixed bag; while it’s nice to have spectators, the backwash can get pretty nasty during high tide. The beach itself is often crowded, especially in the summer, but if you wander south, you might just stumble upon some empty peaks.

The surf here tends to be on the mushy side, which makes it great for beginners looking to learn the ropes. It handles swell sizes starting from about 1ft (0.3m) and works best when the swell direction is coming from the SouthWest. However, it can also work with NorthWest swells. Waves generally break over sand and mostly go right. For the best experience, aim for low to mid tide; high tide can change the dynamics a bit. If you're lucky enough to catch a decent swell, it rarely closes out near the jetty, even when the conditions are big and windy.

In terms of consistency, you can expect decent waves fairly often. If you’re looking to escape the crowds, the beachbreaks further up at St-Jean-de-Monts or over on Ile de Nourmoutier at Barbatre might be worth a check. Overall, it’s a solid spot for those just getting started in surfing, thanks to its forgiving waves and manageable conditions.
