Salsa Brava Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Salsa Brava is a powerful Caribbean reef break on the Costa Rican coast, widely regarded as the country's heaviest and best wave. It breaks over dead coral and peels both left and right, built on thick, barreling walls rather than open faces, so you tend to be either in the tube or out on the shoulder. There are two main takeoff areas: First Peak, a round, bowling section, and Second Peak just to the north, which shifts around and spreads the pack out a little. The reef is shallow and sharp, and this is a wave that rewards commitment.

When It Works

Salsa Brava draws swell from the northeast through southeast (NE-SE), with a northeast (NE) swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, and picks up through both summer and winter. Consistency is moderate, so expect worthwhile windows when the setup lines up rather than waves on tap.

Wind and Tide

Look for a south (S) offshore wind. The reef can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

Bring a shortboard, as this is a wave suited to intermediate surfers who are comfortable on a heavy, hollow reef. Expect a busy lineup when it's on, though the atmosphere in the water is friendly.

Access

Park at the south end of town, where there's free roadside parking, and you'll find a surf shop close by.
