Salsipuedes Surf Forecast Guide

Salsipuedes is a right-hand pointbreak in Northern Baja, and arguably the best in the region. It's really two waves in one spot. Up toward the top of the point sits a reef A-frame that throws bowly lefts and longer, sectiony rights. Around the bend to the south is the main event: a thick, hollow righthander that on its rare best days ranks among the heaviest, meanest points on the North American West Coast. Those world-class moments don't come often, so the reef is the more dependable source of fun.

When It Works

The point draws swell from west through northwest, with a northwest (NW) swell the best match. It really switches on after a big west-northwest winter groundswell, which has to wrap almost 90 degrees into the bay and hold its power for a few miles before reaching the inside point. The reef comes to life on smaller west-to-northwest swells. It works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft and is best in autumn and winter, roughly November to March. Consistency is the catch: it can be somewhat inconsistent, so think worthwhile windows rather than everyday surf.

Wind and Tide

The spot is offshore on a northeast (NE) wind, which keeps it clean even when the predominant afternoon onshore is blowing. Low tide is the call, and the biggest days need an extremely low tide to turn on, with a rising tide generally the better part of the cycle.

Local Tips

This is an expert-level wave, especially at the point where the takeoffs run thick and shallow. Shortboards and guns handle it best when there's size, while the reef opens up to funboards, longboards, and fish on smaller days. Expect a busy lineup when the point is on, and the atmosphere can feel reserved.

Access

Getting here is the hard part. Public road access is gone, so a boat is the best and realistically the only way in, and parking is restricted. Watch for shallow rock sections, and factor in the real risk of a long boat trip that ends with nothing to surf.
