San Gallen Surf Forecast Guide

San Gallen is a right-hand point break widely touted as one of the best rights in Peru. It sits on an offshore island inside a protected national park that teems with wildlife. Swell hugs the cliffs and hits the boulders straight out of deep water, so the wave turns inside out and reels through a series of sections, alternating between throaty, thick-lipped tubes and ramped-up shoulders and hooks. Power is the theme here from start to finish.

When It Works

The point draws swell from south through southwest, with south swell the best match. It breaks over an uneven reef and is usable from 1.5 m / 5 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. Consistency is moderate, so it doesn't turn on every day, but the setup delivers when the right swell lines up. It really needs the early-morning glass to be classic, though it can still be ridden later in the day when conditions allow.

Wind and Tide

Look for a north offshore wind. If the afternoon sea breeze swings far enough west, the second Banana section stays more protected and keeps the wave rideable through the day. It works across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is an expert-only wave. The sheer power of the sections means it rewards advanced surfers and punishes anyone out of their depth. Expect a busy lineup when it works, with boatloads of surfers making the trip out. The island is alive with birds, penguins, and sea lions that often swim up for a close look, so give them space and stay away from their young. Sharks have reportedly been sighted, though there have been no problems.

Access

Getting to San Gallen is boat-only, on an expensive trip from the tiny port of Chaco in Paracas Bay, south of Pisco. Parking at the launch is restricted. There's no camping on the island, so the move is to arrive as early as possible for the cleanest conditions. Save some energy for the return, too: the ride back can be rough in choppy seas, so pack seasickness pills.
