Sands Beach surf guide

Sands Beach is a consistent surf spot located west of Isla Vista. It's a wide beach known for usually having something to ride, making it a popular choice among surfers of various levels. The area can get quite crowded, especially on sunny days when local students flock to the beach. While the vibe is generally laid-back, you'll want to be aware of the rocky areas that pose some hazards, particularly during low tide. Access to the beach is straightforward—you can park at the west end of Isla Vista and take a walk along the bike trail for about a mile.

The surf here can be pretty fun, especially with the right conditions. The best times to hit the water are generally during mid to high tide when the peaky windswell is rolling in. Sands Beach tends to handle swell sizes starting from around 1 ft (0.3 meters) and works best with southwest or northwest swells. You'll find both left and right waves, with a mix of beach breaks over sand and some uneven reef areas. Although it can get quite packed, it's suitable for intermediate surfers looking for a decent session. Just keep in mind that low tides can lead to rip currents and close-outs, so it's good to be cautious.

If you wander farther down towards the slough mouth, you might find some sandbars that can produce good, hollow waves when the conditions align. It’s important to note that offshore winds from the southeast can add some nice texture to the water. Overall, Sands Beach is a reliable spot if you know what to expect and when to surf.

Wind certainty

Wind certainty tells you how much the weather models agree on the forecast.

  • High certainty: Models agree closely; forecast is reliable.
  • Medium certainty: Some disagreement; conditions may shift slightly.
  • Low certainty: Models diverge; treat forecast with caution.

We calculate this by comparing wind speed, gust and direction from multiple models (like GFS, ECMWF, Arome, and Harmonie) and seeing how closely they match. They are weighted, meaning that some models count more than others, depending on how good they are for a certain spot.

Forecast Cheat Sheet

Short on time? Focus on wave energy. It’s the best single metric to gauge how big and powerful the waves will be.

Click any table cell to jump to that forecast hour. The map will update with forecast arrows, so you can see if wind and swell direction are lining up.

Use the table sidebar to switch units for height and speed.

Log your surf sessions to compare forecasts with real sessions and sharpen future predictions.

Models and Updates

Surfnerd blends multiple global and local wind and swell models using advanced interpolation and spatial techniques to create an "ensemble" forecast. Forecasts are refreshed hourly.

Surf Predictions

Our AI-driven algorithm scores surf quality, shown by green, orange, and gray dots. Each forecast hour is rated for wind, swell, and tide quality, then combined into an overall score. Here’s the scale:

Perfect
Good
Average
Bad or No Data

Session logs also feed the algorithm — the more you log, the smarter your forecasts get.
