Sandspit Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Sandspit is a hard-hitting right-hand barrel that breaks over a shallow sand bottom at the entrance to Santa Barbara Harbor. The wave owes its existence to the breakwater built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, whose finger of rock reshapes the local sand flow into intensely hollow rights. A set swings in, meets the backwash off the breakwater, jacks up beside the jetty boulders and spins down the line. Takeoffs are ridiculously steep and often outright airdrops, and when it is really on the wave is a straight tube with no room for carves or turns. Picture Kirra on a smaller, colder scale. It is a good wave, but a serious one.

When It Works

Sandspit draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), and it comes alive best on west (W) swell, ideally with a period under 15 seconds. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, ranging from waist-high on the smaller days up to several feet overhead, where it turns genuinely hazardous. This is an autumn and winter wave with an October to February window, and it is inconsistent, so you need to catch it when the setup lines up.

Wind and Tide

Look for north (N) offshore wind to groom it clean. It works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is an experts-only wave for surfers with real tuberiding experience. The shallow sand bottom, jackhammer lips, and the risk of getting washed over the breakwater or pile-driven into the bottom make it dangerous, and the backwash demands constant attention. Shortboards, bodyboards, and bodysurfing all suit it. Expect a busy lineup when it fires, with dozens out on the best days, and a somewhat reserved atmosphere, so don't drop in or get in the way, and move quickly.

Access

There is a surf shop nearby, and you park in the harbor car park, which is free but restricted to a 90-minute limit. From the marked spaces out by the yacht club you walk or run all the way to the end of the breakwater, which is usually slippery, so take care on the way out.
