Sandy Hook is home to one of the few point setups in New Jersey, tucked inside the Gateway National Recreation Area. Its standout is The Cove, a long right-hand point that can be one of the best waves in the state when it lines up. It often runs smaller than the better-known Monmouth County breaks, and it's fickle, but on the right day you'll hear about perfect rights peeling here while nearly everything else around is breaking left. Nearby, spots like the Brighton Avenue jetty and Beachcombers throw hollow waves on a solid south swell.
When It Works
This is a right-hand point that breaks over a sand bottom. It draws swell from east to south-southeast (E-SSE), and The Cove in particular comes alive on a big south swell, occasionally picking up an easterly too. The spot is usable from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, roughly chest high to overhead. Autumn and winter are the prime months, with the season running from September through March. When everything comes together, the quality is genuinely good, though you'll want to catch it on the right swell.
Wind and Tide
Look for offshore wind from the west-southwest (WSW), with a workable wind window running from southwest through to west-northwest (SW-WNW). It's a low-to-mid tide break, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
The waves here suit intermediate through to expert surfers. Board choice is flexible depending on the day, with everything from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, and bodyboards in the mix. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on, and the atmosphere in the water is generally easygoing.
Access
Getting in is pretty straightforward, with an entry fee to reach the beach. The surrounding area stays fairly clean. Keep in mind you're in a protected recreation area, so expect rangers around and more wildlife than you'll find at most New Jersey breaks.
