São Jorge surf guide

São Jorge is a remote surf spot that doesn't see much action, mainly because it requires a long drive and the access can be tricky. It’s less popular among tourists, so if you’re looking for a quieter place to catch some waves, this might be it. Just know that not a lot of surfers have been here, and those who have are mostly locals, which means there’s a bit of mystery about what to expect.

The waves here generally break over boulders and can be pretty good with the right conditions. The optimal swell direction is Northwest, and it handles swell sizes up to about 6 feet (around 1.8 meters). You might also find some action with Northeast swells. The waves here tend to roll left and work best with South winds. This spot really shines during low, mid, and high tides, so you have some flexibility. Just a heads-up, it’s better suited for expert surfers, so make sure you’re comfortable out there.

Since São Jorge isn’t frequently surfed, you might find yourself with plenty of space in the water. Keep in mind that conditions can change, so be prepared for varying swell and wind patterns. It’s definitely not your average surf spot, and the adventurous spirit will reward you with a unique experience if the waves turn on.
