Sea Island surf guide

Sea Island is a privately owned island, and this means access is pretty limited. It’s a unique spot thanks to the large amount of offshore sand that helps to shade it from south-southeast swells. You can catch some action here during strong northeast windswells, but don’t expect it to be worth a dedicated trip. The waves tend to be best around incoming to high tide.

The surf here can range from knee-high to head-high (about 1 meter to 2 meters). It handles swell sizes from 3 ft to 6 ft (around 0.9 to 1.8 meters) and picks up northeast, east-northeast, east, and southeast swells pretty well. You’ll find both right and left waves breaking over a sandy bottom, though watch out for some rip rap rocks that might be lurking in the lineup. The preferred wind directions are from the north, west-southwest, west, and northwest, making it ideal for the right conditions. This spot is suitable for surfers of all levels, including beginners, intermediates, and experts, and you can ride shortboards, funboards, longboards, fish, or even a SUP.

Parking is pretty limited, so plan accordingly. The crowd factor shouldn’t be a problem since it's not a major surf destination. Keep in mind that strong northeast and southwest winds can create strong currents, but on a good day, it can offer a fun little wave. The best time to surf is generally in the late summer, early fall, and early spring seasons. Just be aware of the strong currents and the occasional sea creatures in the water.
