Shark Island Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Shark Island is one of the most fearsome slab reefs on the planet, the original slab from hell that has fascinated the surf press for decades. It breaks over a shallow rock ledge, demanding an air drop straight into a tube that runs far wider than it is tall before spitting you into the surge or driving you onto the shelf. The outcrop is covered in cunjevoi, so treat this as a heavy, unforgiving wave rather than a playful one.

When It Works

The reef draws swell from northeast through southeast (NE-SE), with southeast (SE) swell the best match. The rights fire hardest on a southeast swell, while the less deadly lefts show up when the swell swings to the east or northeast. It works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 5.5 m / 18 ft. Consistency is somewhat inconsistent, so you may need to wait for the right window to line up.

Wind and Tide

Look for a west (W) offshore wind to clean it up. The ledge breaks on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is an expert-only wave. Bodyboarders love it and a few chargers take it on, but most everyday surfers should give it a miss. Expect a busy lineup, and be ready for localism and attitude when the peak is crowded. Paddle out from the point and try not to think about the name.

Access

There is a car park with free parking, plus paid and roadside parking options nearby.
