Overview
Skail Bay Right is a long right-hand reef in the Orkney Islands, peeling over a rock ledge opposite the left point at Skara Brae. When the setup lines up it delivers a quality, drawn-out righthander.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from the west through northwest (W-NW), with northwest (NW) swell the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, giving a wide window from smaller days up to solid overhead surf.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind. Winds in this part of Orkney are strong and near-constant, so landing the right easterly takes patience. The right breaks on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
It's best suited to intermediate surfers comfortable taking off over a reef.
