Sliding Rock is a thick, heavy left that uncoils over a nasty lava platform near the southern tip of the island. It sits in an unusually exposed corner of coast, which jacks the wave heights up but also means it can take plenty of east-southeast (ESE) trade wind. Rides here run long compared to the short, sucky ledges that dominate this stretch.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from southwest through southeast (SW-SE), with south (S) swell the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, and it breaks consistently enough to be worth checking regularly. Rights show up on small west swells, though those same swells tend to close out the lefts and the rip-torn paddling channel.
Wind and Tide
Look for north (N) offshore wind. The wave works on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call, and the longer rides favour the higher end of that window.
Local Tips
This is expert territory. At size it gets genuinely scary, with exposed reef and gnarly rocks to negotiate on entry and exit. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it turns on.
Access
Fagatele Bay Sanctuary Marine Reserve sits close by and draws divers and nature lovers.
