Smith's Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Smith's Beach mixes shifting beachbreak peaks with a standout reef peak that pulls in most of the swell. The reef unfurls clean righthand barrels across the first section, then meets the edge of a sandy channel that opens up room for hacks and a final inside hit or punt in the shorebreak. On big southwest swells a rolling left also peels off the point. It breaks over uneven reef and sand, so it holds shape without being as shallow as nearby Supers, and there's a little hook that lets you get in early before it folds on the ledge.

When It Works

The peak draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), and it's at its best on a southwest (SW) swell. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft and breaks consistently across that range. The right is the more challenging, barrel-heavy wave, while the left angles down the reef with lumbering predictability and will handle more size when the swell jumps.

Wind and Tide

Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind. The beach gives some shelter from south wind, and that protection improves further along at Nachos. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Low tide is fine when it's small, but once the surf is overhead it really wants mid to high.

Local Tips

Smith's suits intermediate surfers, and you can expect a busy lineup when it's on. When the swell is big, keep an eye out for rips, and note that Gunyulgup Brook drains across the middle of the beach and can shift the sandbars.
