South Beach is a long stretch of beachbreak just south of Newport, over the Yaquina River bridge. It offers miles of sand with predominant lefts, though the banks throw both left and right. The setup sits within South Beach State Park, so there is plenty of room to spread out along the beach.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with west swell the best match. It is a consistent spot, breaking over sand, and is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. That working range covers everything from small, playful days to bigger, more serious sessions.
Wind and Tide
Look for east offshore wind to clean up the faces. South Beach can work through most of the tide, across low, mid, and high, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
With its forgiving beachbreak banks, South Beach is a good option for beginners finding their feet. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it is working, but the long beach gives you space to find your own peak.
Access
South Beach State Park is well set up, with restrooms, showers, and a nearby surf shop. There is a car park with free parking plus roadside parking, and a large campground with tent, RV, and YURT (Year-round Recreational Tent) facilities for anyone wanting to stay close to the surf.
