Overview
South Pier is a right-hand break at Grand Haven, the hub of Michigan surfing on Lake Michigan. The waves break over sand, and the spot has a reputation for handling the bigger windchop when the lake gets going.
When It Works
South Pier draws swell from the southwest through northwest, and northwest swell is the best match. It takes the larger southwest-to-northwest windchop and peels right over the sandy bottom. The working size runs from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. It can be somewhat inconsistent, so you'll want to catch it on the right day.
Wind and Tide
Look for east offshore wind to clean things up. The break works through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The mellow right is a friendly option for beginners. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
Access
Getting in is easy from the end of the pier, and there are more jetty breaks along the coast to the south if you're looking to spread out.
