South Tybee Sandbars are located between Tybee Island and Little Tybee Island. This spot features a series of offshore sandbar breaks, making it a decent place for some surfing. It’s similar to Canoes at Waikiki and you can easily paddle from the south end of the island out to the whitewater. The waves here can provide long rides that are best suited for longboards, especially when the conditions align.

The surf tends to be knee to chest high (about 1 to 1.5 meters) during low to mid-tide. You can expect the waves to break both right and left over a sandy bottom, handling swells from about 3 to 5 feet (0.9 to 1.5 meters) that come in from the east, southeast, and even south directions. The wind from the west is best, helping create fun little peelers perfect for longboards and funboards. This spot can accommodate all surfing abilities, whether you’re just getting started or you’re more experienced.

Access is pretty easy, but parking can be tricky in the summer months, so plan ahead. The crowd factor here is mostly mellow, with not many surfers willing to paddle out this far. Be mindful of strong currents and keep an eye out for the occasional sea creature. The best seasons for surfing here are late summer, early fall, and early spring.
