Spookies is a right-hand point that breaks over uneven reef, and it is strictly an expert wave. The takeoff is an air drop straight into a twisting barrel, with the rocks barely covered, so mistakes get punished quickly. If you want to read it first, there is a good vantage out in front of the blue pool.
When It Works
It draws swell from northeast through southeast, with an east swell the best match. The wave is usable from 1.5 m / 5 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft, and it genuinely needs some size to break clear of the rocks, so the bigger end of that range is where it comes into its own. Consistency is moderate, so you may have to wait for the right pulse.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southwest offshore wind. It can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Lower tides help it break a touch earlier.
Local Tips
This is a wave for experts only, given the air drop, shallow rocks, and punishing takeoff. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it turns on, often filled with the best locals and visitors.
