Stark Bay surf guide

Stark Bay is located on the north side of Rottnest Island, which is just a quick 30-minute ferry ride from Perth. This spot is part of a popular destination for surfers looking to get away from the mainland. Known for its growling, hollow waves, Stark Bay can be a bit challenging and is definitely more suited for those with some experience in the water.

The surf here is best when the swell is coming from the SouthWest and can handle sizes around 3ft (approximately 1 meter). The waves break left over uneven reef, which adds to the complexity and excitement of riding them. Mid to high tide is preferred for the best conditions, and if the winds are coming from the SouthEast, you'll have better luck. It’s important to note that this spot is for experienced surfers only, as conditions can get serious quickly and it's easy to snap boards if you're not careful.

Getting out to Stark Bay generally requires a boat since it breaks quite a distance from shore. Be prepared for some strong currents and always keep an eye on the swell. Whether you're hunting for a challenging session or just looking to explore a less crowded spot, Stark Bay will definitely give you a good test of your skills.

Wind certainty

Wind certainty tells you how much the weather models agree on the forecast.

  • High certainty: Models agree closely; forecast is reliable.
  • Medium certainty: Some disagreement; conditions may shift slightly.
    • Low certainty: Models diverge; treat forecast with caution.

We calculate this by comparing wind speed, gust and direction from multiple models (like GFS, ECMWF, Arome, and Harmonie) and seeing how closely they match. They are weighted, meaning that some models count more than others, depending on how good they are for a certain spot.
