Middle Peak is the cluster of reefs at Steamer Lane, sitting straight out from the access stairs and reaching out and west toward the channel. It splits into First, Second, and Third reefs, each breaking at a different size over uneven reef and sand. Both directions run: the rights start with a heavy elevator drop and soften into a shoulder, while the lefts are steeper and hollower. Those lefts come with a catch, since the next set wrapping in off the Slot or the Point can leave you caught inside.
When It Works
The peak draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest, with northwest (NW) the standout direction. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 5.5 m / 18 ft, and it genuinely handles any size in that window, though reading the line-up gets harder as the swell builds and the peaks shift around. Consistency is a real strength here, so it breaks reliably when there is swell in the water.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind. The reefs work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a spot that suits intermediate surfers ready to commit to steep takeoffs. Expect a very busy lineup packed with all kinds of wavecraft and skill levels, and the shifting peaks keep everyone on the move. The water is full of life too, so you may find yourself paddling out through the kelp beside a sea otter or seal.
Access
You will find restrooms, showers, and a surf shop nearby. Parking runs all along the point and out at the Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse, which also houses the Lighthouse Surf Museum, with a mix of free, paid, metered, and roadside options.
