Overview
Steamer Lane – The Slot is a wedgy right-hander at the classic Steamer Lane setup in Santa Cruz. It breaks over uneven reef with some sand, close to the cliff, and is known for tube rides or aerial sections because it can close out a bit.
The wider Lane setup is one of California’s standout right points, with Lighthouse Point’s geography helping west and northwest swells bend into Monterey Bay.
When It Works
The Slot works best on west swell and is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. It can also pick up southwest to northwest swell, and the broader Steamer Lane zone can use west, south, and northwest swell.
It is moderately consistent and can work year-round, across spring, summer, autumn, and winter.
Wind and Tide
Medium to low tide is best at The Slot, with a rising tide better. Low, mid, and high tides can all be surfed.
The key offshore wind is northwest. Northeast, north, northwest, and glassy conditions are also part of the workable wind window.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate-friendly wave, with shortboards, funboards, longboards, fish, and guns all used depending on size.
It gets busy, especially after 3pm and on weekends. It can be less crowded when it is giant or during school hours, and The Slot may be a little quieter than other peaks because it sits close to the cliff.
Watch for longboarders, locals, drop-ins, big surf, seals, sea otters, kelp, kayakers, the inside rock, and getting pinned near the cliff.
Access
Park in the lot and walk down the stairs. There are restrooms, showers, a surf shop, and a mix of free car park, paid, metered, and roadside parking.
The water is mostly clean, but it can be semi-dirty after significant rain.
