Stinson Beach is a mellow beach break running along a sheltered crescent of fine white sand. It's not a core surf scene, but fun peaks show up along the sand, breaking both left and right over a sandy bottom. The surf can get genuinely good when the swell is small and clean, and windswells work well here.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW) and is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. It's moderately consistent, with the better window running from autumn through winter into spring, roughly September to April.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast (NE) offshore wind, or glassy mornings when the air goes still. It can work across low, mid, and high tide, though a rising tide and higher water generally deliver the cleaner shape.
Local Tips
This is a friendly spot for beginners, and it suits a funboard, longboard, or fish. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working, with an atmosphere that can feel a little reserved. Worth knowing before you paddle out: there have been numerous shark sightings here, including a non-fatal attack on a bodyboarder.
Access
Getting here is easy, take Highway 1 from Highway 101 and follow the signs. There's a large car park, along with restrooms and summer lifeguards.
