Overview
Stockton is a south-facing Cape May beach and often the pick of the local south-facing options. Stockton Lefts break off a rock jetty over sand, with lefts that can get fun when the sandbar is right. Beach replenishment has made the bars more hit-or-miss than they used to be.
When It Works
The spot is consistent and is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. It needs at least chest-high to overhead surf to show its full potential, and an overhead swell on the incoming tide can bring barrels unless the sand has recently been pumped.
The optimal swell direction is northeast, with swell also working from northeast through east-southeast to south. The main season is autumn and winter, especially September through March.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind direction is north. Mid tide is best, and a rising tide is better.
Local Tips
This is best suited to intermediate surfers. Shortboards, fish, longboards, and bodyboards are all suitable here depending on the day.
Crowds are usually fairly quiet to moderate, but it can get crowded when the rest of New Jersey is onshore and Stockton is working. The lineup atmosphere is somewhat reserved, with a mellow to moderate local vibe.
Access
Access is easy, though it is toughest in the summer months. Cape May beaches require beach tags, and summer surfing is designated.
There are restrooms, showers, lifeguards, metered parking, and roadside parking. Watch for rip currents, submerged pilings, stormwater, and beach-tag checks.
