Overview
Sugar Shack is a sand-bottom beach setup around the north side of Tybee Island. It rarely breaks and is not really a surf destination, but it can offer a fun little wave on its day.
The wave can break left and right, with a steeper outside section that fattens out before the suckier inside.
When It Works
Sugar Shack is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.1 m / 7 ft. It works best on more solid east-northeast to northeast windswell, with northeast to east swell also listed for the spot.
Late summer, early fall, and early spring are the noted seasons, with autumn also flagged as a main season.
Wind and Tide
A strong northeast wind can help get average peaks going. The offshore wind direction is northeast.
Mid to high tide works best, and a rising tide is better.
Local Tips
Crowds usually should not be a problem, and the lineup is generally quiet, though it can feel a bit reserved.
Boards listed for the spot include shortboards, funboards, longboards, fish, and SUPs. It is listed for beginners, intermediates, and experts.
Hard northeast and southwest winds can produce strong currents, though paddling is generally pretty mellow. Watch for strong currents, miscellaneous sea creatures, and some runoff after heavy rain.
Access
Access is easy. Parking is metered and roadside, and it may be a problem in the summer months, so bring change for meters.
To find it, go to the big anchor, turn off the street to the left, follow it around to the Sugar Shack restaurant, then take the walkway to the beach.
