Sumpters is a long, walling right-hand reef with the odd barrel section. It breaks over an uneven reef but sits deeper than the neighbouring reefs, so the deep-water gully makes for an easier paddle out.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from south through west, with southwest swell the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, and it can be somewhat inconsistent.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind. The reef works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Sumpters suits intermediate surfers. Expect a busy lineup when it's on.
Access
Park respectfully in Overton, where there's free roadside parking, then walk in, head down the pipe, and paddle out through the deep gully. Despite the long walk and limited parking, it stays generally crowded.
