Overview
Sun Beach is an average beachbreak on the coast running east from Havana toward Varadero, and it doubles as the number one tourist spot in Cuba. The beach is exposed to the northwest and the sand bottom throws up both lefts and rights. It's really only worth the effort if you're already staying in one of the hotels here.
When It Works
Swell comes in from northwest through northeast, with northwest the best match. The beach is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.2 m / 4 ft. It picks up waves moderately often, so it pays to keep an eye on it rather than count on surf every day.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast offshore wind. The sand can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The waves here suit beginners. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
Access
Lifeguards watch the beach, and they sometimes close it once the surf comes up, so it's worth planning around that.
