Sunnyside Bay surf guide

Sunnyside Bay is a remote surf spot that’s not usually crowded, making it a nice getaway for surfers looking for some waves without the usual hustle and bustle. The bay is set in a serene area, providing a peaceful vibe while you catch some rides. You’ll find it tucked away, with a view of the ruins of Findlater Castle overlooking the surf, which adds a bit of charm to the place.

The surf here mainly works best with a north swell direction, as it catches waves coming from the northwest and east. It’s got a reef break, which means you’ll be surfing over uneven reef, so watch your footing. The waves generally work well at sizes around 3ft (about 1 meter), and you’ll find both lefts and rights, depending on the swell and tide. Low to mid tide is the sweet spot for getting those waves working right, and if you’re lucky enough to catch it on a day with south winds, you’ll be in for a decent session.

Sunnyside Bay is quite secluded, so it’s a great spot for those who enjoy a bit of solitude while surfing. Just remember, since it’s a triangular reef, the wave consistency can be a bit hit or miss, so have your expectations set. It’s not the most popular spot, which might appeal to some who prefer less crowded places to enjoy their time on the water.
