Overview
Sunzal is a long right-hand point that peels over a broad boulder reef, one of the most dependable waves on El Salvador's coast. The reef juts well out to sea, so it pulls in almost any swell that's running, and the sharply angled, relatively deep setup holds its shape in all but the biggest days. The trade-off is a soft, forgiving wave with plenty of fat sections and long rides. If it's flat at Sunzal, it's flat everywhere. The break sits just up the coast from El Tunco, a laid-back village at the river mouth. Overall it's a decent, fun wave rather than a textbook point.
When It Works
The point draws swell from south to southwest (S-SW), with southwest (SW) the best match. It's usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, and it's very consistent, with waves showing up nearly every day. Spring and summer bring the most reliable surf. Rides can be long, so expect your shoulders to feel it after a few good ones.
Wind and Tide
Look for north (N) offshore wind. Sunzal breaks across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a welcoming wave that suits everyone from beginners on up, and the mellow walls make it a favourite for longboarders. Shortboards, funboards, longboards, and fish all work here depending on the size. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on, with a somewhat reserved feel in the water.
Access
You'll find a surf shop at the spot, plus a car park with free parking and roadside spots nearby. You can also reach it by bus from La Libertad in about half an hour for less than a dollar. Take care getting in and out when the surf has size and the tide is high, as it can get a bit sketchy.
