Surfers Beach (Puerto Rico) surf guide

Surfers Beach in Puerto Rico is a well-known surf spot located on the Ramey Air Force Base. It offers a mix of fun and punchy waves depending on the swell direction, making it accessible for surfers looking to catch some rides. The beach features a reef break with several peaks that provide plenty of room for surfers, which is helpful when the crowd gets busy. The parking is simple, with a dirt lot available after driving down the hill.

The surf here is quite varied. You can expect waves that range from head high to double overhead (about 1.2 to 3 meters), and it handles swells from 4 to 10 feet (about 1.2 to 3 meters). The best swell directions are from the North, Northwest, and Northeast, which have their own unique effects on the waves. When the NW swells come in, you’ll often see more of an A-frame setup, while N and NE swells create a longer right pointbreak effect that attracts many surfers. The right wave is shifty and can provide several different sections, while the left is shorter and punchy. The best wind for this spot is from the Southeast, and it works well at low, mid, or high tide, making it quite versatile for different surf conditions.

Generally, the crowd factor is manageable because the peaks are spread out. While it can get crowded, most surfers find enough space to enjoy their session. This spot is suitable for intermediate surfers and is good year-round, but late summer and fall are ideal for tropical cyclone swells, while late fall through early spring tends to be more consistent. Whether you bring a shortboard, funboard, longboard, fish, or even a bodyboard, you’ll find options that work with the conditions.

Wind certainty

Wind certainty tells you how much the weather models agree on the forecast.

  • High certainty: Models agree closely; forecast is reliable.
  • Medium certainty: Some disagreement; conditions may shift slightly.
  • Low certainty: Models diverge; treat forecast with caution.

We calculate this by comparing wind speed, gust and direction from multiple models (like GFS, ECMWF, Arome, and Harmonie) and seeing how closely they match. They are weighted, meaning that some models count more than others, depending on how good they are for a certain spot.

Models and Updates

Surfnerd blends multiple global and local wind and swell models using advanced interpolation and spatial techniques to create an "ensemble" forecast. Forecasts are refreshed hourly.

Surf Predictions

Our AI-driven algorithm scores surf quality, shown by green, orange, and gray dots. Each forecast hour is rated for wind, swell, and tide quality, then combined into an overall score. Here’s the scale:

Session logs also feed the algorithm — the more you log, the smarter your forecasts get.
