Surfers Paradise (Gold Coast) Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Surfers Paradise is a sand-bottomed beachbreak in the middle of the Gold Coast, and the backdrop of hi-rise hotels, casinos and swanky apartment buildings makes it a rare one for Australian waters. The beach itself is dedicated mostly to swimmers, so stay out of the water between the flags — the lifeguards don't have a sense of humour about it. The peaks worth surfing sit in between the patrolled areas, and they swing both ways with lefts and rights.

When It Works

The bank draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south, with east swell the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and swell turns up here reliably enough that you can count on something most of the time.

What you get varies a lot. Some days the peaks are slow and mushy, which is ideal if you're learning. Other days, often on summer northeast swells, they suck up and wall off with hollow sections. Add the crowd to that and it becomes a real lucky dip as to whether you score a good session.

Wind and Tide

Look for west offshore wind. The beach can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is a beginner-friendly stretch of beach, and on the mushier days it's a good place to find your feet. Expect a busy lineup — the crowd is a big part of what decides how your session goes here.

Access

There's plenty on hand once you arrive: restrooms, showers, lifeguards, a surf school and a surf shop. Parking can be tricky, though. You've got a car park, metered and paid options, and roadside spots to work with.
