Takapuna Reef surf guide

Takapuna Reef is a surf spot located just north of Auckland, easily accessible for local surfers. The reef is right in front of the boat ramp, making it convenient to get in the water. The area around the reef is often crowded with experienced surfers, so you’ll want to be prepared for some competition when you head out. The beach south of the reef offers beach breaks that are suitable for beginners and longboarders, but they generally lack shape compared to the reef itself.

The surf at Takapuna Reef picks up best with a northeast swell, but it can handle swells coming from the north and east as well. The waves break over an uneven reef, with both left and right waves available, so there are options for different preferences. Ideal conditions are usually found with swell sizes around 2 feet (about 0.6 meters), and it's best to surf during low to mid tides. Keep in mind that this spot is most suitable for intermediate surfers due to the challenges posed by the reef itself.

The area can get quite packed with other surfers, so be ready to share the waves. Also, look out for the channel marker pole, as it can be a hazard in the water. Overall, if you're looking for a spot that offers a bit of a challenge and some decent waves, Takapuna Reef can be a good choice.
