The Bluff, also known as Red Bluff, is a legendary left-hand reef break and the main reason surfers make the trip out to this remote stretch of Western Australia. It is an extremely fast wave that peels over a shallow bottom of dead coral, throwing thick-lipped, express barrels for those willing to commit.
When It Works
The wave draws swell from south to west, with southwest (SW) the best direction. It is usable from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft and comes into its own around 5-6 ft, when the ballsy, near-vertical take-off drops you straight into the barrel. It is moderately consistent, so expect quiet spells between the right swells.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind to clean it up. The reef works across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave. The take-off is demanding, the coral bottom is shallow and covered in urchins, and a helmet and booties are strongly recommended. Expect a busy lineup with a firm local pecking order, so courtesy and full commitment count for a lot here.
Access
There is camping nearby and free parking, but this is genuine wilderness, so bring all the supplies you will need.
