The Castle is a surf spot that has a bit of history. It used to feature a bar and surf shack but got transformed into a more touristy spot before eventually burning down, leaving behind some stumps. Today, the area offers a consistent surf experience, and while it’s rarely crowded, you might want to watch out for some pesky greenhead flies that hang around.
When it comes to surfing, The Castle really shines with swells coming from the northeast, but it can also handle swells from the south. It works best with wave sizes starting at around 2 feet (about 0.6 meters) and up. You’ll find both lefts and rights breaking over sandy bottoms, which is beginner-friendly, making it a good spot for those just starting out. The waves are generally fatter and a bit mushy, perfect for longboarding. The ideal conditions come during low, mid, and high tides, especially on a nor’easter when the swell is pumping.
Keep in mind that while it’s a consistent spot, the submerged objects from the old pier can be a bit tricky, so always be aware of your surroundings. The preferred wind direction is from the northwest, which helps keep things fun and make the most of your session.
