The Cove - Nayarit surf guide

The Cove in Nayarit is a well-known surf spot that offers a unique experience for surfers. It's accessed mainly by panga, making it a bit remote and reserved mostly for those in the know. If you're staying at a more upscale resort, you might have easier access. The surrounding environment offers a bit of a challenge as it's a 40-minute rock hop from El Anclote, so be prepared for the trek. Expect bigger waves here compared to the breaks inside the Bay, which makes it more suitable for experienced surfers.

This spot is well-exposed to swells from different directions, particularly thriving on Northwest swells. The waves tend to break right over an uneven reef, so keeping your wits about you is important. You'll find that it can handle swell sizes of around 3 to 6 feet (1 to 2 meters). When tide levels are low, mid, or even high, you'll find waves that have a fast, sectiony nature, providing a challenge for intermediate surfers. The preferred wind direction is Northeast, but be mindful—this spot can be a bit sensitive to wind conditions, and it really shines when the wind cooperates.

While The Cove is not the easiest spot to reach, it rewards those who do with some nice waves. Just keep in mind that the surf can get sucky at lower tides, so timing your sessions is crucial. With a solid understanding of the swell and wind, you can maximize your experience here, but it's best suited for those with an intermediate skill level looking to take on a bit of a challenge.

Wind certainty

Wind certainty tells you how much the weather models agree on the forecast.

  • High certainty: Models agree closely; forecast is reliable.
  • Medium certainty: Some disagreement; conditions may shift slightly.
  • Low certainty: Models diverge; treat forecast with caution.

We calculate this by comparing wind speed, gust and direction from multiple models (like GFS, ECMWF, Arome, and Harmonie) and seeing how closely they match. They are weighted, meaning that some models count more than others, depending on how good they are for a certain spot.

Forecast Cheat Sheet

Short on time? Focus on wave energy. It’s the best single metric to gauge how big and powerful the waves will be.

Click any table cell to jump to that forecast hour. The map will update with forecast arrows, so you can see if wind and swell direction are lining up.

Use the table sidebar to switch units for height and speed.

Log your surf sessions to compare forecasts with real sessions and sharpen future predictions.

On the map, click a metric label to bring that arrow to the front — handy when arrows overlap.

Models and Updates

Surfnerd blends multiple global and local wind and swell models using advanced interpolation and spatial techniques to create an "ensemble" forecast. Forecasts are refreshed hourly.

Surf Predictions

Our AI-driven algorithm scores surf quality, shown by green, orange, and gray dots. Each forecast hour is rated for wind, swell, and tide quality, then combined into an overall score. Here’s the scale:

Bad or No Data

Session logs also feed the algorithm — the more you log, the smarter your forecasts get.
