Overview
The Patch is a sheltered, gutless beginner's spot at the end of Bolinas' Overlook Drive, facing southeast and looking out over a nice view to the south. The bottom is a gentle mix of rock ledge and sand, and while that keeps the surf on the weak side, the slow slope lets longboarders find some genuine glides.
When It Works
The break draws swell from south through west (S-W), with south swell the best match. It really comes alive on big winter swells or big southerlies, so save it for days with real size behind them. As a reef, it peels both left and right, and it works through a usable range of 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Expect moderately consistent surf rather than something that shows every day.
Wind and Tide
Look for a north offshore wind to clean things up, though don't expect the breeze to make this wave stand up and pitch. Tide-wise, low tide is the call, and a rising tide is generally better.
Local Tips
This is a forgiving, beginner-friendly wave that suits patient longboarding. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
