The Rock - Costa Azul Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

The Rock is a challenging right-hand reef break and one of the three sections that make up Costa Azul on Mexico's south shore. It breaks over uneven reef and sand, and the whole lineup is studded with big rocks, so it rewards surfers who can read a shifting, rocky takeoff. The wave itself is genuinely fun and holds size, though a few awkward and occasionally mushy sections can make it tricky to negotiate.

When It Works

The Rock draws swell from southwest through southeast (SW-SE), with southeast (SE) the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, handling everything from head high up to double overhead. Conditions are consistent, and the spot comes alive across spring, summer, and autumn. A strong south swell on a mid-to-high tide is when it really turns on.

Wind and Tide

Look for south (S) offshore wind. The reef favors mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. As the tide drops, the rocks and urchins sit closer to the surface, so higher water is both safer and better.

Local Tips

This is an expert-level wave. The proper takeoff zone is small and sits right next to the rock, so the lineup fills up quickly and catching a decent wave gets harder as it does. Expect a competitive but somewhat reserved crowd. A shortboard or fish suits it best. If you'd rather skip the tight, rocky peak, the mellower walls at nearby Old Mans are the friendlier option.

Access

There's a surf shop on hand, and parking is restricted. Park at Zippers and walk over, or leave the car near Cabo Surf Hotel and walk in.
