The Rock - Kabalana is a wedgy left-hand reef that breaks in front of a huge offshore rock at Kabalana beach, just beyond Kogalla. The wave peels over dead coral and is about as reliable as they come, so if it happens to be flat here it's worth writing the day off and doing something else.
When It Works
It draws swell from west-southwest through south-southeast, with southwest the best match. Consistency is one of its calling cards, and it holds a wide working range, usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind. The reef breaks through low, mid, and high tide, with low tide the standout and a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers. Because the wave shows up so reliably, there's almost always a pack on it, so plan on a busy lineup. The reef sits shallow and can dish out a real thumping, so give it the respect it deserves.
