The Spit surf guide

The Spit is a surf spot located near Sea World, known for its laid-back vibe and a mix of surfable waves. It’s less developed compared to other spots along the Gold Coast, which means there are plenty of empty peaks to choose from, stretching towards Main Beach. While it does attract tourists, the crowd isn’t usually overwhelming, making it a decent option for those looking to enjoy a day on the water.

The waves here mainly break left but you can also catch some rights. The optimal swell direction is east, with the spot handling swell sizes from about 2ft (0.6 meters) up to around 6-8ft (2-2.4 meters) when the conditions are right. When smaller, the waves tend to be more slopey and manageable, which is great for beginners. On the other hand, it can get hollow with a moderate swell but be warned; with bigger swells, it can close out quickly, and currents can pick up, so stay alert. Additionally, the best time to surf is during low, mid, or high tide, with a preference for west winds that help keep the waves clean.

Accessing The Spit is easy thanks to a large parking lot and facilities nearby. However, if you’re keen on catching the good waves, be prepared for a bit of a crowd, especially near the northern jetty, where surfers often flock to the trim peaks. Just keep an eye out for the boat and shark traffic in the area as you paddle out.
