The Wedge surf guide

The Wedge is a well-known surf spot located in Newport Beach, California. This place is famous for its powerful and radical waves that can get quite large. It's a go-to for bodysurfers, bodyboarders, and skimboarders, but surfers also get their fair share when conditions are right. The action is mostly concentrated around a wedging left that reflects south swell energy off the Newport Harbor jetty. Make sure to check the surf conditions before heading out, as it can get intense.

When the south or southwest swell comes in, The Wedge can produce waves that reach over 20 feet (about 6 meters) close to the shore. The waves can be hollow and heavy, creating some of the biggest barrels in Southern California. On days with the right swell, it’s a true spectacle to see the giant mutant peaks that form, especially when the swell period aligns perfectly. All boards except for bodyboards are banned from 10 am to 5 pm during the summer months, giving bodysurfers a chance to go all out. The optimal swell direction is south, and it can handle swell sizes ranging from 6 feet (about 1.8 meters) to more than 20 feet. The tide can vary from low to high, but all tide levels can work, especially when paired with a northeast wind.

Parking can be a challenge, especially when the surf is pumping, so be prepared for that. The spot can get crowded with expert surfers trying to ride the intense waves, and the vibe can feel a bit heavy at times. It's best for those who are confident in their abilities and comfortable with the risks involved. While it’s a great place to catch waves, it can also serve as an awesome spectator spot because the action happens so close to shore. Keep an eye on the environment, as it’s not the best after rain. Overall, when it’s on, The Wedge offers a thrilling experience for surfers looking for something extreme.

Wind certainty

Wind certainty tells you how much the weather models agree on the forecast.

  • High certainty: Models agree closely; forecast is reliable.
  • Medium certainty: Some disagreement; conditions may shift slightly.
  • Low certainty: Models diverge; treat forecast with caution.

We calculate this by comparing wind speed, gust and direction from multiple models (like GFS, ECMWF, Arome, and Harmonie) and seeing how closely they match. They are weighted, meaning that some models count more than others, depending on how good they are for a certain spot.

Forecast Cheat Sheet

Short on time? Focus on wave energy. It’s the best single metric to gauge how big and powerful the waves will be.

Click any table cell to jump to that forecast hour. The map will update with forecast arrows, so you can see if wind and swell direction are lining up.

Use the table sidebar to switch units for height and speed.

Log your surf sessions to compare forecasts with real sessions and sharpen future predictions.

On the map, click a metric label to bring that arrow to the front — handy when arrows overlap.

Models and Updates

Surfnerd blends multiple global and local wind and swell models using advanced interpolation and spatial techniques to create an "ensemble" forecast. Forecasts are refreshed hourly.

Surf Predictions

Our AI-driven algorithm scores surf quality, shown by green, orange, and gray dots. Each forecast hour is rated for wind, swell, and tide quality, then combined into an overall score. Here’s the scale:

Perfect
Good
Average
Bad or No Data

Session logs also feed the algorithm — the more you log, the smarter your forecasts get.
