The Wedge surf guide

The Wedge is a well-known surf spot located off the south inlet jetty. It's famous for its left-hand waves and can offer rides of up to 100 yards (90m) and more. This spot operates best at high tide, which is a bit different from many other local breaks. When the wind is coming from the northwest, it tends to create good conditions here. If you’re keen on exploring further, there are outside shoals about half a mile south that break way out, but you’ll need a boat to reach them. These can hold a decent swell and typically break both ways, making them a viable option during larger hurricane swells.

When it comes to surfing at The Wedge, the optimal swell direction is from the northeast, and it can handle swells from 2 feet (0.6m) up. The breaks over sand set up left waves, which can be fun to ride. If you want the best conditions, keep an eye on the tide and aim for high tide sessions. While the spot can work on south swells, it can also handle north winds. Just remember to check the wind coming from the west for the best experience.

The environment around The Wedge is pretty unique, as it’s situated in a wildlife sanctuary at North Assateague. The area can be somewhat isolated, and accessing it usually means paddling across the inlet from Ocean City’s fishing harbor. It's generally consistent and rarely gets overcrowded, which can be a big plus for surfers looking to catch some waves without a big crowd around.
