Overview
Torrisdale is one of Sutherland's most flexible and reliable waves, a quality rivermouth set on a big, dune-backed sandy beach. The most consistent bank sits by the Strathnaver at the eastern edge of the bay, where long rights reel along the sandbar and shorter lefts peel into the rivermouth. Peaks show up all along the length of the bay, and when a huge swell kicks in there's a more sheltered option down at the western end. Its distance from Thurso keeps it quieter than the better-known spots.
When It Works
The bank draws swell from northwest to north (NW-N) and works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, roughly waist-high to overhead. It's an autumn and winter wave, best from September through February. On its day the rivermouth is excellent, throwing long walls with hollow sections over a clean sandy bottom.
Wind and Tide
Look for south-southeast (SSE) offshore wind, with a workable window running from south-southwest to southeast (SSW-SE). It handles most of the tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
Everything from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards and bodyboards works here, and it suits intermediate through expert surfers. Expect a quiet lineup that can feel a little reserved.
Access
Get in either via Bettyhill with a paddle across the river, or by hiking in from the Torrisdale end. The river and beach throw rips, especially when it's bigger, and the wave is usually bigger than it looks, so treat the paddle-out with respect.
