Overview
Treachery is a sand-bottom beach break serving up both lefts and rights, and quite possibly the most consistent beach on the NSW coast. It earns its name from the power of the waves, the rips, and the number of large sharks spotted sniffing around. Whatever the day, there's usually something to ride.
When It Works
Consistency is the draw here: any swell finds its way in, and it often breaks a couple of feet bigger than anywhere else nearby. It pulls in swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), with southeast (SE) the best match, and is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 5.5 m / 18 ft. On its day it handles triple overhead faces that barrel hard on both the outside and inside banks. The northern peak offers a paddling channel, though you should prepare for a few beatings as you drift down.
Wind and Tide
Look for north (N) offshore wind, and note that summer northeasterlies also blow offshore here. Conditions stay changeable through the tide, working across low, mid, and high, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Expect a busy lineup, particularly when the campsite fills up over the holidays. If you're after something heavier, there are reefs to explore further south for sucky, mean waves.
