Overview
Tynemouth - Longsands is a popular, fun beachbreak at the centre of the Newcastle surf scene. Itโs a long sandy beach with lefts and rights, surf schools, and a mix of beginner-friendly waves and heavier peaks out back.
It has hosted the British Nationals and has produced several top UK pro surfers. On clean, medium-sized swells it can be excellent.
When It Works
Longsands works year round, with autumn, especially September to November, being the best season. The optimal swell direction is northeast, and the broader swell window runs from north through east-northeast to southeast.
The spot is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. It breaks over sand and can produce good banks through the tides.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind direction is west. It breaks on low, mid, and high tide, with higher tides usually best and a rising tide better.
Local Tips
This is a good option for beginners and intermediates, with shortboards, fish, funboards, longboards, SUPs, and bodyboards all fitting different days.
It is often fairly quiet, but it can get crowded, especially on weekends. The vibe is generally relaxed and cordial, though the lineup can feel a bit reserved. Crowds are the main hazard.
Water quality can be poor after heavy rain because of the nearby River Tyne.
Access
There is paid roadside parking along Grand Parade above the beach, plus a car park in the middle of the bay. Facilities include restrooms, a surf school, a surf shop, and a cafe on the beach.
