Ventura Overhead/Emma Wood State Beach Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Ventura Overhead and the Emma Wood State Beach setup pack two very different waves into one stretch. Ventura Overhead is the outside reef, breaking a quarter-mile offshore, and it only comes to life on big winter swells. The take-off is heavy and jacking, best met on a big-wave board, and it feeds into a good, sizeable wall that runs short and usually favors the right before backing off. Inside sits the more approachable Emma Wood beachbreak and reef, where punchy, hollow peaks break mainly right.

When It Works

The reef draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with west (W) swell the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 6.1 m / 20 ft, a wide window, though the outside reef needs the bigger end of that range to show itself. It stays moderately consistent through the season. The outside reef is a winter wave, while the inside peaks come into their own over the summer months.

Wind and Tide

Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind to clean things up. It can work through most of the tide, from low to high, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This break suits intermediate surfers, but the outside reef's heavy take-off really calls for a big-wave board when it's on. Expect a busy lineup, since both setups crowd up quickly once they start working.

Access

There's a campground on site, and you get in at the south end of old PCH. Park in the state car park, which charges a fee, with restrooms and showers on hand.
