Overview
Vlissingen is a sand-bottomed beach break on the south coast of Walcheren that peels both left and right. The long righthanders beside the jetty are the standout, especially for longboarders, and there are plenty of other banks to spread out along. When it's on, the whole south coast of Walcheren lights up with high-tide waves.
When It Works
The spot draws swell from the northwest through north, coming alive on the bigger northwest or north pushes, with northwest (NW) the best direction. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.2 m / 4 ft. Consistency is on the low side and it only fires a couple of times a year, so be ready when the right swell lines up. The banks beside the jetty tend to hold the best waves.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast (NE) offshore wind to clean things up. It breaks around mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call, which fits its reputation as a high-tide wave.
Local Tips
The long, forgiving walls make it approachable for beginners, and it's a natural fit for longboarders. Expect a busy lineup when it's working.
Access
There's plenty on hand: restrooms, showers, camping, a lifeguard, a surf school, and a surf shop. Parking is easy too, with a car park offering free parking, along with paid, metered, and roadside options.
