Overview
Waitpinga is a sand-bottom beach break that can turn seriously hollow, throwing up A-frames that barrel and then wall into the gutters and rips running the length of the beach. The name means "windy place," and it offers both lefts and rights when it comes together.
When It Works
It draws swell from south through southwest, with southwest the best match. The break is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, but it needs offshore or glassy conditions and just the right amount of swell to let you paddle out the back, with faces around 10 ft about the ceiling. Consistency is moderate, and it can turn into a blown-out mess when things aren't lined up.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind. It can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers, and you can expect a busy lineup when it fires. Take the sharks seriously here: it is one of the sharkiest breaks in SA, with white pointers and bronze whalers breeding down the western end near the fickle right-hand point, and worse again around at Parsons Beach. There have been fatal attacks and sightings of big sharks are common, so avoid early and solo sessions.
