Waverly surf guide

Waverly is a surf spot located north of Wanganui, down at Waverly Beach. It’s a laid-back beach that offers a mix of different surf conditions, mainly focusing on a right-hand point break. The beach itself sits beside some interesting rock formations from Cave Beach, which adds a bit of a unique touch to the area.

The surf at Waverly can be a bit messy at times, but when conditions are right, the waves can be fun. It handles swell sizes starting from 2 feet (about 0.6 meters) and can pick up swells coming from the SouthWest, with other swell directions including SouthEast and NorthWest. The waves usually break over sand, making it a decent spot for beginners. The best time to surf here is during mid to high tide, and if the wind’s coming from the NorthEast, you might find some cleaner waves. Just be mindful that it’s not always a guaranteed session, so check the conditions before heading out.

To get to Waverly, simply head north from Wanganui via London Street, Great North Road, and State Highway 3. Once you reach Waverly, take a left onto Oturi Road and then continue onto Waverly Beach Road, leading you straight to the beach. You can explore along Waipipi Road to find a good peak, with the best break usually found to the west.
