Wijk aan zee surf guide
Wijk aan Zee is one of the most consistent surf spots along the Dutch coast, great for all levels and known for its open beaches and relaxed vibe. It works well year-round and is especially worth checking when the charts show swell from the north.
The waves here break over sand, making it a bit more forgiving than some rockier spots. It handles a wide range of swell directions, from the southwest all the way around to the north-northeast. The magic really happens when there's a clean swell coming straight from the north. Even small swells of around 0.3 to 0.4 meters (1 to 1.4 feet) can shape up nicely here, offering fun conditions when other spots might be flat.
Wind matters a lot at Wijk. It works best when the wind is coming from the east—anything from northeast to south-southwest can be workable, but true offshore conditions happen when the wind blows directly from the east. Tide-wise, the spot is surfable at any stage, but low tide is where it tends to shine, especially on a rising tide.
Bring some patience on smaller days, but if the forecast lines up with a north swell and easterly wind, you’re in for something good. It's also a solid place for a spontaneous session when you're already in the area.
Wijk aan Zee is easy to reach, with plenty of parking options near the beach. It’s a popular beach spot, but you’ll still find room to spread out—especially if you walk a little. Just don’t forget to check the tides before you go.
