Woolacombe Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Woolacombe is a mellow, open beachbreak spread along a two-mile stretch of sand, with peaks scattered the whole way and loads of room to spread out. It's popular with longboarders and beginners, and it makes a good option for escaping the Croyde crowds. Expect fun, flexible waves with both lefts and rights, even if it isn't a standout performer overall.

When It Works

The beach draws swell from southwest through northwest (SW-NW), with southwest (SW) swell the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, giving a wide window from waist-high peaks up to overhead surf. Waves roll in year round, but the spot comes into its best form from September through November. At the northern end by the town, a stream helps sculpt consistent banks and a popular high tide right, while Combesgate just to the north offers shapely low tide peaks and a lined-up high tide right off the rocks. When it gets big, keep an eye out for rips.

Wind and Tide

Look for east (E) offshore wind. The banks break right through the tides across low, mid, and high, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is a forgiving, beginner-friendly beach that suits just about anything you paddle out on, from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, SUPs, and bodyboards. The lineup stays fairly quiet and can feel a little reserved, but with so much sand to work with there's always space to find your own peak.

Access

There's ample paid parking around Woolacombe, including a large car park overlooking the sea and spaces on Marine Drive running parallel to the beach behind the dunes. Facilities are plentiful, with restrooms, camping, a lifeguard, a surf school, and a surf shop. The water is generally clean, though there can be sewage discharge after heavy rain.
