Limón is Costa Rica's Caribbean surf province, a reef-heavy stretch of coastline that catches swell from the northeast and east and comes alive when winter storms track across the Caribbean Sea. The waves here break differently from the country's Pacific side: most of the standout setups are reef and coral breaks that reward intermediate and advanced surfers, while a solid handful of sandy beach breaks give beginners somewhere friendlier to start.
The province clusters around a few laid-back towns. Most of the surf spots in Limón work on swell arriving from the east-northeast through northeast, with some also picking up east and southeast angles. Tides are forgiving here, with breaks working through low, mid, and high water, which gives you flexibility once a swell is running.

The coral reef breaks are the serious end of the spectrum and best left to confident intermediates and experts on a shortboard, with Salsa Brava the standout for anyone chasing raw power. The sandy beach breaks are the beginner-friendly picks, coming to life on smaller swells from around 1 to 2 feet and staying more manageable when the reefs turn heavy.
Season matters on this coast. The Caribbean side is at its best in the winter months, roughly December through March, when the biggest and most reliable swells arrive, with a smaller secondary window in summer. Sizes range widely, from waist-high days on the beaches to overhead reef sessions of 6 to 10 feet when a strong swell lines up.
